Rishi Sunak, UK's New PM: Everything You Need to Know

The 42-year-old former Chancellor of Exchequer, a devout Hindu, is the youngest British prime minister in 210 years. Rishi Sunak scripted history when he was appointed by King Charles III as Britain's first Indian-origin Prime Minister after being elected unopposed as the new leader of the governing Conservative Party on Diwali. Sunak has been a member of the Conservative Party for Richmond (Yorks) since 2015.

Sunak studied at Winchester College and read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Lincoln College, Oxford, in 2001.was born in Southampton on May 12, 1980, to Indian parents Yashvir and Usha Sunak in East Africa.

His wife Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys- Second largest IT company founder NR Narayan Murthy. Couple got married in 2009 and were blessed with two children.

Europe is no stranger to Indian-origin prime ministers. Portugal counts two premiers of Goan ancestry, including current Prime Minister António Costa. Leo Varadkar, whose father is from Mumbai, served as Ireland’s prime minister from 2017 to 2020.

On the day of Diwali, a major Hindu festival, it became clear Britain will get its first Indian-origin prime minister. The ascension of Rishi Sunak, a former finance minister, to the top leadership post in the country’s ruling Conservative Party may finally cap months of intra-Tory drama, which saw two successive prime ministers bow out in the face of political scandal and economic crisis.

Both the wife and the husband are one of the wealthiest couples of Britain. According to the Times Rich List , their net worth is around  $823.4 million. They even crossed out  King Charles, who is now worth $600 million if their individual worth is calculated. However, the majority of the couple’s wealth is from His father’s in-law’s firm’s stake worth 400 million Euros.

To gain the PM position, Rishi Sunak defeated the centrist politician Penny Mordaunt in the PM race and became the one of a kind PM in the history of the UK.
